“gooey butter cake” sums it up. if you’ve got a few hours, some active yeast, and really love things that are delicious, give this cake a try. it can be made with cake mix, but the yeast cake contrasts with the butter topping so amazingly. it was desert last night, breakfast this morning, and now i have given it away so that i don’t get sick. it’s not the world’s easiest cake, but oh boy is it worth it.

Right, or. Take a store-bought graham-cracker pie crust, fill it with cake batter, and cover it with Betty Crocker icing. Then dine. You will be most of the way toward realizing this delicious Missouri treat.
Gooey butter cake was my one real regional cuisine discovery of the campaign trail (frozen custard is mostly indistinguishable from ice cream). Putting together food for the press and staff in Springfield, MO, I was recommended this dish by our contact at the high school. Where should I get it? From the Pie Lady. How do I reach her? I’m not sure, but the Hotdog Man will know; here’s his number.
It was a good tip.
